Privacy Policy

The short version: Movie Critics doesn't ask for your email, phone number or password. The only things stored on our servers are what online play needs: the name you type, your guesses and a random ID. The free version shows ads from Google AdMob, which collects some device information to do that; Premium removes ads. We never sell your information.

This policy explains what information the Movie Critics app and website ("Movie Critics", "we", "us") collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. If you have questions, email support@moviecriticsgame.com.

Information we collect

Games on one phone (pass-and-play)

Player names and guesses in pass-and-play games stay on your device. They are not sent to us and are cleared when the game ends.

Online games

When you host or join an online room, we store the following in our game database:

Display name: the name you enter to play. It can be a nickname.
Game activity: the room code, your guesses, when you joined, and whether you're currently connected.
A random player ID: the app signs in anonymously and gets a random identifier. It isn't linked to your name, email or phone number. It lets you keep your place in a room and lets us enforce the game rules.

Stored only on your device

The app saves a few settings on your device, such as the name you last used online and how many online games you've hosted today. These stay on your device.

Purchases

Premium is purchased through Apple's App Store or Google Play. They handle payment, and we never receive your card details. We receive only the information needed to confirm your Premium status, such as a purchase receipt tied to an anonymous ID. We may use a purchase-management service to do this.

Ads in the free version

If you don't have Premium, the app shows full-screen ads from Google AdMob after each game and when you quit one. To show ads, limit how often you see them and measure them, Google may collect information from your device such as your IP address, device type, app activity related to ads and, on Android, your device's advertising ID. Ads are limited to content suitable for general audiences. Learn more in how Google uses information from apps that use its services.

If you're in the European Economic Area, the UK or Switzerland, the app asks for your consent before ads use your personal data, and you can change your choice. Premium removes ads entirely.

Technical information

Like any online service, our hosting and database providers process technical information (such as IP address and device type) to connect you and keep the service running. Apart from ads in the free version, we don't use advertising or analytics tools.

How we use information

To run online games: show your name and guesses to the other players in your room, keep score and keep rooms in sync.
To enforce the game rules, for example hiding guesses until a round is revealed.
To provide Premium features you've purchased.
To show ads to players without Premium.
To respond when you contact us.

Who can see your information

Other players in your room see your display name, whether you've locked in, and your guesses once a round is revealed.
Service providers that run the app for us, including Google Firebase (database, sign-in and website hosting), Google AdMob (ads in the free version) and Apple or Google for purchases.
When required by law, or to protect the rights and safety of our users or others.

We do not sell or rent your personal information. Apart from Google AdMob showing ads in the free version, we don't share it for advertising.

How long we keep it

When a host closes a room, it's deleted along with its players and guesses. When you leave a room, your player entry is removed. Rooms that are left open without being closed may remain stored until we delete them. We may remove old rooms at any time, and we'll delete your information on request.

Children

Movie Critics is a family-friendly game. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. We encourage all players to use a nickname rather than their full name. If you believe a child has given us personal information, email us and we'll delete it.

Your choices

You can play pass-and-play games without sending anything to our game servers.
Premium removes ads. In the EEA, UK and Switzerland you can also change your ad consent choice.
You can leave any online room at any time, which removes you from it.
Uninstalling the app removes the information stored on your device.
You can ask us to access or delete information about you by emailing support@moviecriticsgame.com. Including the room code and name you used helps us find it.

Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under local law. Contact us and we'll help.

Security

Data is sent over encrypted connections, and database rules limit who can read and change each room. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top of this page. For significant changes, we'll give notice in the app or on this website.
